MtnRanks Outpost: River Rock Roasting Company

River Rock Coffee Roasters La Verkin

The locals (and pro's) spot for good coffee, cafe food, and views.

In the small desert town of La Verkin, Utah, just above the Virgin River, lies one of our favorite places to grab breakfast and a coffee in Southern Utah. River Rock Roasting Company opened in 2012 and for the last four years has done an excellent job of satisfying caffeine cravings for hikers, mountain bikers, adventurers, and locals alike. Offering a diverse (and delicious!) selection of teas and fresh ground coffee with an often locally sourced breakfast and lunch menu, River Rock satisfies your cravings in a way you can feel good about. With it's homely, low key attitude and diverse mix of patrons, anyone can stop in and feel right at home, including professional freeride mountain bikers like Brandon Semenuk, who frequent the River Rock during Redbull Rampage.

The handwritten menu is extensive, but not repetitive

While the coffee and breakfast sandwiches are delicious, what sets River Rock apart from other boutique cafes, is it's views. While you're welcome to stay inside to enjoy your fare, why bother when there are excellent canyon views right out the back door? Perched on the edge of the Virgin River canyon, the back deck and patio area of River Rock is a tranquil place to get your morning off to the right start. And with sunshine in the forecast nearly 70% of the year, who wouldn't want to be soaking up some rays while enjoying an Americano and Ham and Cheese Croissant?

While the shop is often crowded due to it's popularity, don't be put off by the line. The staff there is friendly and works quickly to get through orders while still maintaining the quality of drinks and food. If you can't stand to wait a few minutes for your chow, get a coffee and one of their gigantic cinnamon rolls to enjoy in the meantime. Whatever you order, it will be worth the short wait, we haven't found anything on the menu yet that we don't like! Whether you are hiking The Narrows in Zion National Park, riding mountain bikes on Guacamole, or just camping and exploring the desert for the first time, River Rock should be on your shortlist to get the day of adventure started right.
